| Frankincense and Myrrh farmers Association
Famed for its spiritual and medicinal properties, frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsulaand throughout Africa for over 5000 years.
Frankincense and myrrh were well known in the ancient world in places as far and wide as China, Egypt, Greece, Babylon, Rome and Assyria. They have always been economically important and remain so today. At one time they were so rare and in such high demand that they were more valuable than gold. The Boswellia and Commiphora trees from which true frankincense and myrrh are harvested are incredibly rare and can only be found in Somalia, Yemen and Oman.
The Boswellia and Commiphora trees grow in the wild without human intervention. They grow on steep slopes, deep gullies and often out of polished marble rocks, making access to them difficult and perilous. The ownership and guardianship of each of these trees rests with the families living nearby. This is a responsibility which is held in high esteem and has been passed down from generation to generation.
